History

This area was founded by a local missionary group in Mbale town called Christian Faith in Action International (CFAI)in 2008. Butooto is a range lying along the great Mt. Elgon escarpment found in the eastern side of the pearl of Africa. It's home for Bagisu- a people known for their traditional culture. The Elgonian volcanic soils are also famous for supporting growth of matooke/bananas and the best Arabic coffee. The Main economic activity is agriculture production at subsistence level. Never the less the community is characterized by high illiteracy rates which is manifested in different forms as unemployment, primitive farming methhods, early marriages, poor family planning, high HIV prevalence, malnutrition among children, and land fragmentation.
